The German law for renewable energy, the Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz (EEG), aims to increase the amount of heat and electricity derived from renewable sources. It prioritizes the protection of the environment and is one in a series of statutory measures aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and coal. Since being adopted, the EEG has been deemed to be a success story for reimbursement schemes and has been used as a model for 47 different nations. The applicable law was passed on 6th June 2008, taking effect 1st January 2009.
